SARS-CoV-2 and Pets

We would like to put out a statement to all our clients as we have had some inquiries regarding vaccines for pets against coronavirus.
It has come to our attention that some animal hospitals are offering a “Coronavirus” vaccine to both dogs and cats so that they will be protected against the virus that is wreaking havoc on the planet right now.  While we are devastated by the growing numbers of inflicted humans getting the SARS-CoV-2 virus, we continue to stand with our position that dogs and cats are highly unlikely to catch the same deadly virus.
To date, only 10 confirmed cases of animals having the human coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 have been reported to the USDA.
However, it is to be said that dogs and cats can be inflicted by their own types of coronaviruses and there are vaccines on the market to protect them for their respected viruses.  But please pay attention to what is being offered to your dog or cat while at a veterinary hospital; if a veterinarian is trying to sell you on a vaccine that will protect your furry loved one from SARS-CoV-2, it will not.
As a review, humans contract the SARS-CoV-2 virus while dogs can get the Enteric Canine Coronavirus (CCov) or the Respiratory Canine Coronavirus (CRCoV) and cats can get Feline Infectious Peritonitis/Feline Coronavirus (FIP/FCoV).
As always, we ask that pet owners do their research before getting a pet and understand what vaccines will protect their new friend from the outside world.  We also encourage anyone who has questions to call our office to discuss how best to take care of their pets.
For more information regarding SARS-CoV-2 and pets, please visit either the USDA’s website or the CDC’s website listed below.
Thank you and stay safe!  We are all in this together!

Canine Parainfluenza

Due to the recent rise in Parainfluenza cases in dogs in the Westchester and Fairfield Counties, Valhalla Animal Hospital recommends that any dog that comes in contact with the unknown vaccinated public should be vaccinated against CPIV.  Any dogs that frequent dog parks, training, boarding, or grooming establishments are at greater risk.  Also, any owners who feel they should vaccinate, even those who don't fit into those categories, can still vaccinate for safety precautions.
For more information regarding what CPIV is, please visit the AVMA's website here.
